Excursions for all tastes
We suggest some ideas for excursions around Sabaudia.
- The Pontine plain .
If you decide to visit the surrounding area, you will notice that in the Pontine plain, the roads are devoid of bends and climbs. The plain is characterized by the ample spaces, the forest, the numerous tree-lined avenues, the numerous canals, the fertile countryside cultivated with modern techniques.
Three main roads cross it from north-west to south-east:
the via Appia , in the inner part towards the Lepini mountains, the via Mediana / Pontina SR148 and the Litoranea road, towards the sea.
These roads, almost parallel to each other, they are intersected perpendicularly by miliary roads, numbered with the crossing of the Appian mile.
- 3 beautiful seaside towns: San Felice Circeo (11 km away), Terracina (19 km) and Sperlonga (36 km).
Three seaside cities, different from each other but all very interesting: for places and for shopping. Terracina also recommend it for good restaurants.
- Tempio di Giove Anxur in Terracina (19 km).
Magnificent Roman temple on the Acropolis of Terracina, which offers a breathtaking view of the coast and the entire Pontine plain.
Particularly nice to visit at night.
- Piana delle Orme (25 Km).
The inhabitants of Agro Pontino , who have settled there for less than a century, feel poor with historical roots. These are mainly identified, in the great reclamation, in the ancient villages of huts ( Lestre ) and in the events of the 2nd World War and of fascism, which took place there.
This private museum contains many testimonies of these origins.
- Abbey of Fossanova (21 km).
In medieval times, a group of Cistercian monks settled in the Pontine Marshes.
They built some drainage works to make the land cultivable and built a splendid Abbey. The building has remained intact over the centuries, and is particularly famous because St. Thomas Aquinas died there.
They are also very beautiful: the cloister, the refectory, the infirmary and the other buildings in the village.
- Castle and town of Sermoneta (40 km).
Sermoneta, in medieval times it was a very important city, belonging to the Caetani family (which gave the papacy two pontiffs: Gelasio II and Bonifacio VIII).
The centuries and the wars have not even scratched its castle (paid visit) and the delightful surrounding village.
- Ninfa Gardens (45 km).
Wonderful botanical gardens, internationally renowned, always made by the Caetani family, in the 1800s, among the remains of Ninfa : medieval city, abandoned due to wars.
You can visit them a couple of days a month.
- Pontine Islands .
The Pontine Islands are real pearls that are worth a visit.
The two main ones are Ponza and Ventotene , reachable by ferry or hydrofoil from S. Felice C., Terracina, Formia and Anzio.
The journey takes a couple of hours, so at least a full day should be provided for an excursion.
